Description of the webinar: Plantar foot and heel pain is a common complaint among orthopedic patients. Electrodiagnostic techniques including nerve conduction studies and needle electromyography provide the least subjective, most reliable and widely available means to assess neurologic involvement in patients with heel pain.
Objectives that participants will meet with the webinar:
1. Review the pertinent neuromusculoskeletal anatomy of the ankle and foot.
2. Discuss the differential diagnosis of plantar foot and heel pain.
3. Identify the components of the electrodiagnostic examination of the ankle and foot.
4. Discuss the pathophysiology of tarsal tunnel syndrome, Baxter’s neuropathy and medial calcaneal neuropathy.
Speaker name and brief bio: Mark E. Brooks, PT, DSc, ECS, OCS
Dr. Brooks is a practicing physical therapist with over 25 years of experience as a clinician, administrator and educator in the field of physical therapy, pathology and neurophysiology. He is a graduate of the University of Kentucky where he received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. He completed his doctorate in clinical electrophysiology at Rocky Mountain University in 2005. He is board certified by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties in both Clinical Electrophysiology and Orthopedics.
He has worked in the Department of Pathology at the University of KY and as a physical therapist in many settings, including outpatient, acute care, home health and long term care. In 1992 he went into private practice with his wife, also a physical therapist currently serves as the CEO of Professional Rehabilitation Associates, PSC, a large rehabilitation private practice in Kentucky and continues to practice both as a physical therapist and electroneuromyographer. He also serves as a diagnostic neurophysiology consultant to several health care facilities and physician practices and averages over 1000 cases per year.
His teaching experience includes courses taught at the University of Kentucky, University of Indianapolis, Midway College, Somerset Community College and he was one of the first instructors in Rocky Mountain University’s transitional DPT program. He has also taught in numerous continuing medical education courses. He is also a researcher and has been published in JOSPT, among others. He currently continues to be involved in research activities to include ongoing research studies and serving on several doctoral student committees.
